Commander’s Update Notes

As promised, I would use this spot to keep you updated as to what is going on with the post.  We have been busy!!!  We did a Memorial Day procession with the VFW’s help and a 4th of July parade with the help of the Ypsilanti Jaycees.  Also on the 4th we did a Flag Retirement ceremony at the Jaycees Field of Flag For Hero’s at Riverside Park, it was very moving.

At last nights meeting; yea, remember, we do still have them on the 3rd Wednesday of the month; the membership took several important actions.

1.      The post voted to use our three (3) remaining Millionaire party licenses to raise funds for next years 4th of July parade and Boys and Girls state and other programs.  V-957 of the 40/8 just did one, four day event and raised $4,757.00!!!

2.      A letter of intent to offer a purchase price for our property from the Gilbert house was read to the membership.  It is not a binding thing, it’s just that they have expressed an interest and would like to meet with us to discuss an offer.  The post voted that Amir Fawzy and I would be the authorized representatives to meet with the Gilbert house to hear their offer, but not to enter into an agreement.  Once an offer is made it will be communicated to the post membership.

3.      Along the same lines, Vance Meads, member of the building committee, presented a rough drawing of a plot plan drawn by Donald McMullen showing a new 40 ft by 80 ft on the North lot line.  With this plan, we would have about 40 parking places.  The membership also voted to authorize up to $1,000.00 to have Mr. McMullen draw some conceptual drawings that would be suitable to submit to the Ypsilanti Historic District Commission and the Planning Department to get some ideas of what they would be requiring.

4.      Joe Jamnick and I have looked at several places to hold meetings at, but they just aren’t suitable or else they were too expensive ($7,000.00 a month lease!!).  We’ve also looked at existing building trying to find one that would meet our needs on a permanent basis, and again, they just aren’t there or they are outrageously priced.

5.      It appears to me at least, that with the upcoming proposal from the Gilbert House and a possible report about the feasibility of rebuilding on our current site, we may actually be having a special election as early as September’s Business meeting, at least on these two ideas.  If the post decides to accept the Gilbert offer, then the only option left, again from what Joe and I have seen, is to purchase land and build us a new building.  I want to reiterate, nothing has been carved in stone, and the membership will have the final say.

Remember, if you want to contact, e-mail works fine at ldabernathy@gmail.com.  Hopefully I will see you at next months meeting, the 3rd Wednesday of August.
